Not quite what I was expecting but a decent book. To really enjoy this book you will need to understand a bit of Scottish history. Even though this is a work of fiction a lot of the people mentioned really did exist and a lot of what happened in this book coincides with Scottish history. There are Jacobites and Whigs, Campbells and Stewarts (Stuarts), and Highlanders and Lowlanders that you have to differentiate between to figure out who is who and what side they're on and who they're against to get a better understanding of why they do what they do in the book. Thankfully there was a Historical Note included at the beginning to attempt to clear some of it up.
